Accessibility

Built for everyone, without exception

ProNova52 is committed to ensuring that every participant, investigator, and team member can use our platform regardless of ability. We design and test against internationally recognised accessibility standards.

Standards We Follow

ProNova52 targets conformance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA across all public-facing and authenticated application interfaces. We additionally reference:

  • EN 301 549 — the European harmonised standard for ICT accessibility, required for public-sector procurement across the EU.
  • Section 508 — U.S. federal accessibility requirements for electronic and information technology.
  • NHS Digital Service Standard — accessibility expectations for health technology used within the UK National Health Service.
  • AODA (Ontario) and ACA (Australia) — regional accessibility legislation we use as supplementary benchmarks.

Accessibility Features

Keyboard Navigation

Every interactive element is reachable and operable via keyboard alone. Tab order follows logical reading flow with visible focus indicators throughout.

Colour & Contrast

All text meets WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for body, 3:1 for large text). UI controls use distinct non-colour cues alongside colour indicators.

Screen Reader Support

Semantic HTML with ARIA landmarks, live regions for dynamic content, and descriptive labels on all form controls and interactive elements.

Responsive Design

Fluid layouts that adapt from 320px mobile screens to ultra-wide desktops. Text remains readable without horizontal scrolling at 200% zoom.

Target Sizing

All interactive targets meet minimum 44×44 CSS pixel touch areas per WCAG 2.5.5, ensuring comfortable use on touch devices.

Plain Language

Instructions, error messages, and labels use clear, concise language. Medical terminology is accompanied by plain-language explanations where appropriate.

How We Test

Accessibility is verified through a layered testing approach:

  • Automated scanning — axe-core and Lighthouse audits run on every deployment to catch regressions in colour contrast, missing labels, and ARIA misuse.
  • Manual keyboard testing — every new feature is navigated using keyboard-only interaction before release.
  • Screen reader validation — tested with VoiceOver (macOS/iOS), NVDA (Windows), and TalkBack (Android).
  • Zoom and reflow — verified at 200% and 400% browser zoom to ensure no content is clipped or obscured.
  • User feedback — we actively incorporate feedback from users with disabilities to improve real-world usability.

Known Limitations

We are transparent about areas where work is ongoing:

  • Some third-party charting components in the results dashboard may have limited screen reader descriptions. We are working with upstream libraries to improve this.
  • PDF exports currently do not include tagged PDF structure. A tagged-PDF option is on our roadmap.
  • Drag-and-drop question reordering requires a mouse; an accessible keyboard reorder alternative is provided.

Report a Barrier

If you encounter an accessibility barrier while using ProNova52, we want to hear about it. Please contact us with:

  • A description of the issue and where it occurred
  • The browser, operating system, and any assistive technology you were using
  • How the barrier affected your ability to complete a task
